THE WILLIAM COBBETT

Location: 4 Bridge Square, Farnham, Surrey, GU9 7QR, UK.

I have been frequenting this particular public house for about ten years for only one reason - the pinball machine. The William Cobbett has had a selection of pinball machines over the years, although recently the machine Monopoly has been a regular sight. However, this machine is in a poor state of repair and often has features disabled to prevent the ball getting stuck.

So, imagine my delight at seeing, not the Monopoly machine, but a newer machine, in perfect working order, in its place on my last visit. This machine, which feels brand new, compared to the Monopoly machine, is Monster Bash.

Monster Bash costs £1 for 3 credits. Replay is currently around 50,000,000 points, although it was quite generous with awarding free games. This game has just two flippers, a button launch, and a comparatively wide gap down the middle between the flippers, although it does have a useful ball-save feature. It is a really nice machine to play.

The pub itself is a sociable and popular venue. It serves food at lunch times, which I have to say is fantastic – good, basic, reasonably priced – I recommend the beef lasagne! Drinks are average price for the area, serving Budweiser, San Miguel, Becks, a selection of other lagers and ales on tap. There’s a good selection of wines and variety of bottled beverages. Being located close to the Hogs Back Brewery there’s often guest ales to try.

On a Friday night it turns into a student pub, with a jukebox containing a huge selection of music to play with. Wednesday nights they have live music and there’s a flat screen TV for the sports fans. Families are welcome during the day and come 5.30pm the place becomes an after-work drinking place. It’s a very versatile pub, which can be surprising, since it’s not actually all that big inside. There is a pool-room upstairs, and the beer garden is partially covered with a marquee to keep the rain off on the busy evenings.

There is also table-football, two fruit machines, a “Who Wants to be a Millionaire” quiz machine and Link cash machine. The only downside to this pub is that it can tend to get rather smoky inside, but this won’t be a problem for much longer*.

The William Cobbett has its own car-park, and there is a public car park across the road in the Farnham Maltings. It is also only a short walk from Farnham train station. They are part of the Pub Watch scheme and the police station is only a short way up the road. It is an enjoyable place to visit at any time of the day or week.

*Editor's note: The UK introduces a total smoking ban in all enclosed public spaces from 1st July 2007.
